General Mentoring Tips
The following is a list of suggested tips that may be helpful to mentors in the mentoring relationship.
- Assist students in organizing homework assignments via a planner or folder
- Help student develop good study habits by directly discussing various ways to study
- Network with school staff for access to fun learning tools available to students
- Keep student actively involved and limit a given activity to 20 minutes or less
- Vary activities so student has opportunity to talk (share or explain), write, and manipulate or construct
- Help student with more than just homework such as organizational skills, time management, and planning
- Read for pleasure with the student, it is the foundation for much coursework
- Help student review past facts, concepts, and skills. Games such as Yahtzee or Scrabble can provide education and fun
- Listen lots, talk little
- Ask student to explain an idea or process rather than you showing how to do the procedure
- Help student develop a positive attitude toward studying
- Encourage student to build confidence in his/her own learning by following up on student progress and offering praise and encouragement.
